Sicilien! (for an English version please scroll down)

Vi är tillbaka på vår båt som nu ligger på Sicilien. Det har hänt en del sedan vårt förra blogginlägg men nu skall vi försöka berätta vad som hänt sedan dess.

I den senaste uppdateringen har vi just lagt till i en marina på Lipari. Här anslöt våra nya gäster Lennart och Birgit.

 De flög till Catania och tog sedan buss till Milazzo, därifrån tog de en färja sista biten över till Lipari. Lennart och Birgit har varit våra främsta förebilder för att våga göra vår segling ner till Medelhavet. Så det var kul att få bjuda med dem på vår båt nu och att ha en så erfaren besättning gjorde att vi kände oss extra trygga om något skulle hända. Det finns nästan inga problem eller svårigheter som Lennart inte kan lösa!

Under deras första dag på Lipari så ordnade vi en taxi som kunde köra oss runt på ön Lipari. Detta var ett trevligt sätt att bekanta sig med ön, chauffören pratade bra engelska och visade oss vad som var värt att se. 

Turen tog ett par timmar och gav oss trevliga minnen. Eftersom det var lågsäsong så tog han sig extra mycket tid med oss. Nästa dag tog vi oss över till grannön Vulcano. Här ankrade vi i en fin vik tillsammans med ett par andra båtar. Botten bestod nog mest av ganska lös vulkansand så ankaret ville inte fastna riktigt bra. Men eftersom det blåste väldigt lite så fik vi nöja oss med det, men det känns allt lite konstigt att ligga för natten med ett ankare som inte satt riktigt hårt fast. Det blev en heldag på Vulcano med både promenader och en rundtur med en hyrbil. Det här är en aktiv vulkan, men med aktiv menas att den spyr ut rök som luktar svavel. Det är inte den bästa av lukter!

Från Vulcano seglade vi ner mot Messinasundet och precis söder om där sundet är som smalast så angjorde vi en marina för natten. För redan nästa morgon så fortsatte vi söderut utefter Sicilien östra kust. 

Det är nästan inget tidvatten i Medelhavet vilket underlättar för oss båtfolk. Men det finns ändå en del tidvatten som tillsammans med vädret gör att det ganska smala sundet mellan Sicilien och Italien kan ha ganska kraftiga strömmar. Men detta var inte något större problem för oss den här gången. Nästa hamn blev Catania som är Siciliens näst största stad. Det här blev bara ett stopp för natten i en inte speciellt mysig marina centralt i staden. Med det blev i alla fall en middag på en liten restaurang nära marinan. Nästa hamn blev Syrakusa där vi stannade i ett par nätter.

 Här blev det påtagligt att det nu var lågsäsong. Vi var kanske enda gästande båt i Syrakusa och det började bli ganska sent på säsongen. Väderprognosen för den närmaste tiden var inte den allra bästa så vi bestämde oss för att gå hela vägen till vår vinterhamn, Marina di Ragusa nästa dag. Dagarna började bli kortare och man vill helst komma fram till en ny plats i dagsljus så vi avseglade innan solen gått upp. Väl framme i vår kommande vinterhamn kändes allt bra, nu kunde det börja blåsa utan att vi var tvungna att segla eller hitta en passande hamn. Tillsammans med Lennart och Birgit så hyrde vi en bil och gjorde fler utflykter på Sicilien. 

Efter nästan en vecka i marinan så åkte Lotta med Lennart och Birgit hem till Sverige. Magnus stannade en vecka till för att fixa med båten och förbereda den för vinter. Den här marinan är ganska stor, ca 700 platser, och i flera båtar bor man kortare eller längre tider. Det är ganska internationellt så här finns besättningar från flera olika länder och ganska mycket aktiviteter för den som vill träffa andra. Orten är i huvudsak en semesterort vilket gör att den är lite tom på vintern men på sommaren är det nog mycket folk här.

I februari så åkte vi ner till båten igen för att bo på båten och ha den som utgångspunkt för att turista på ön. Vi hyrde en bil tillsammans med Anders och Gitte på vår kompisbåt "Frida af Visby". Lotta och Magnus ville gärna passa på och försöka åka skidor på Etna, men slumpen ville något annat. Etna är en aktiv vulkan och nu passade den på och släppa ut extra mycket aska så den snö som fanns i på den enda skidorten, täcktes av alltför mycket aska för att kunna ha liftarna öppna. Men det blev istället en guidad tur upp mot toppen, ända upp får man inte ta sig på lagligt sätt.

 Men över 2000 meter var det snö och toppen ligger på 3400 meter. Etna är en fantastiskt syn när den inte är täckt av moln, när vädret är klart så kan man se den från stora delar av Sicilien många mil bort.

När det här skrivs så är vi tillbaka på båten och har varit det i en vecka nu. Vi har städat och fixat och förberett oss för vårens segling. Vi har vinkat av Frida af Visby för den här gången. De ska ta sig direkt till Grekland medan vi planerar att se mera av Sicilien och Malta innan vi lämnar båten igen för att tillbringa sommaren i Sverige. Vi har bokat ett helårskontrakt i Marina di Ragusa så vi har friheten att åka hem när vi vill och komma tillbaka när vi vill. Den lösa planen är att ta en sväng till Grekland i höst men att komma tillbaka hit för en vinter till på Sicilien.

Sicily!

We are back on our boat which is now in Sicily. A lot has happened since our last blog post but now we will try to tell you what has happened since then.

In the latest update we have just added a marina on Lipari. Here our new guests Lennart and Birgit joined us. They flew to Catania and then took a bus to Milazzo, from there they took a ferry the last bit over to Lipari. Lennart and Birgit have been our main role models for daring to do our sailing down to the Mediterranean. So it was fun to invite them on our boat now and having such an experienced crew made us feel extra safe if something were to happen. There are almost no problems or difficulties that Lennart cannot solve!

During their first day on Lipari, we arranged a taxi to take us around the island of Lipari. This was a nice way to get to know the island, the driver spoke good English and showed us what was worth seeing. The trip took a couple of hours and gave us nice memories. Since it was low season, he took extra time with us. The next day we went over to the neighboring island of Vulcano. Here we anchored in a nice bay together with a couple of other boats. The bottom probably consisted mostly of quite loose volcanic sand so the anchor didn't want to stick really well. But since there was very little wind, we had to make do with it, but it all feels a bit strange to anchor for the night with an anchor that wasn't really settled well. We had a full day on Vulcano with both walking and a tour with a rental car. This is an active volcano, but by active we mean that it spews smoke that smells of sulfur. It's not the best of smells!

From Vulcano we sailed down towards the Strait of Messina and just south of where the strait is narrowest we entered a marina for the night. The next morning we continued south along the eastern coast of Sicily. There is almost no tide in the Mediterranean, which makes it easier for us boaters. But there are still some tides which, together with the weather, mean that the rather narrow strait between Sicily and Italy can have quite strong currents. But this was not a major problem for us this time. The next port was Catania, which is Sicily's second largest city. This was just a stop for the night in a not particularly cozy marina in the center of the city. With that, we at least had dinner at a small restaurant near the marina. The next port was Syracuse, where we stayed for a couple of nights. Here it became clear that it was now low season. We were perhaps the only visiting boat in Syracuse and it was getting quite late in the season. The weather forecast for the near future was not the best, so we decided to go all the way to our winter port, Marina di Ragusa the next day. The days were getting shorter and you want to arrive at a new place in daylight so we set sail before the sun rose. Once we arrived at our upcoming winter port, everything felt good, now it could start to blow without us having to sail or find a suitable port. Together with Lennart and Birgit, we rented a car and made more excursions in Sicily. After almost a week in the marina, Lotta went home to Sweden with Lennart and Birgit. Magnus stayed another week to fix the boat and prepare it for winter. This marina is quite large, about 700 places, and several boats are inhabited for shorter or longer periods. It is quite international so there are crews from several different countries and quite a lot of activities for those who want to meet others. The place is mainly a holiday resort which means that it is a bit empty in the winter but in the summer there are probably a lot of people here. In February we went down to the boat again to live on the boat and use it as a starting point for touring the island. We rented a car together with Anders and Gitte on our friend's boat "Frida af Visby". Lotta and Magnus wanted to take the opportunity to try skiing on Etna, but luck had other plans. Etna is an active volcano and now it took the opportunity to release extra ash so that the snow that was in the only ski resort was covered by too much ash to keep the lifts open. But instead it became a guided tour up to the top, you are not allowed to go all the way up legally. But over 2000 meters there was snow and the top is at 3400 meters. Etna is a fantastic sight when it is not covered by clouds, when the weather is clear you can see it from large parts of Sicily many miles away. As of this writing we are back on the boat and have been for a week now. We have cleaned and fixed and prepared for the spring sailing. We have waved off Frida af Visby for this time. They will go straight to Greece while we plan to see more of Sicily and Malta before leaving the boat again to spend the summer in Sweden. We have booked a full year contract in Marina di Ragusa so we have the freedom to go home when we want and come back when we want. The loose plan is to take a trip to Greece this fall but come back here for another winter in Sicily.
